ABOUT
Shawn Henderson, better known as BIKES, may have taken the most roundabout way possible to becoming a DJ. Starting with a guitar at age 9, his involvement with music has been as varied as his tastes are. From leading punk rock bands to digging in the crates for dusty samples, he has seen many sides of the musical spectrum since his humble beginnings.
However it wasn’t until late 2010, when an amped up electro remix and a burning desire to share his love of music triggered the “a-ha” moment he was looking for. Having grown tired of the isolation of being a bedroom producer, he decided it was time to get involved and pursue DJing, the missing piece of his musical puzzle. That very day, he booked his first gig before he even owned (or knew how to use) all the necessary equipment. Clearly the decision was the correct one.
Fortunately, a life of musical study and a familiarity with music production software gave him an edge that dramatically cut his learning curve. After only a few months of practice he had booked art shows, played after parties and even acquired a Friday night residency on Vancouver’s Granville St. To say things have moved quickly would be an understatement.
With such a varied background, he is equally suited setting the mood for private events and functions or rocking the dance floor at one of Vancouver’s many clubs. Now working out of his railtown studio space in the downtown eastside, he continues to develop his production talents as well as refine his craft as a DJ.
